Several of our Camp Shaw staff/volunteers have completed school internships as part of their summer staff experience. We are happy to work with staff to help them complete their academic requirements. Just ask!

Read about some examples of past internships below:

Lupa’s Barn & Garden Internship

Lupa completed a summer agricultural education/agribusiness internship for the 2023 camp season as the Barn and Garden Program Coordinator. Over the course of the summer, she was able to work with campers and help them to explore all that agriculture offers. She planned for and planted the garden in the spring, and then cared for it throughout the summer to help provide some fresh produce to the campers in her camptivity and to staff. In addition to tending to the garden, she also had several animals she cared for including rabbits, chickens, sheep, and a goat. As part of her internship requirements, she submitted weekly assignments detailing what she was working on and how it was going. Through this experience, Lupa gained a better understanding of what it takes to be a teacher in agricultural education. She loved it so much that she returned to the program in summer 2024!

Blu’s Nature Internship

Blu completed an internship at Camp Shaw during 2020. The focus of the internship was on environmental education. She recorded an Animal Ambassador of the Week video for each week of the summer. Each video highlighted a different animal that can be found in and around Camp Shaw. She also made a few educational nature camptivity videos to provide activities for campers and families to do at home during the summer. Behind the scenes, she also created a map of the trails, created lesson plans for activities that can be used for the nature program and off-season outdoor education groups, and completed a research project.

Noodlez’s Office Assistant Internship

Noodlez completed a general business internship during the summer of 2019. Over the course of the summer, she assisted Squirt in the office generating rosters, answering emails, working check in/check out, answering phone calls, and learning how to use Quickbooks. She updated reservations and payments, assigned campers to their cabins, and on a daily basis you could find her answering parent emails, handling camper mail, and participating in morning leadership meetings. She did a few administrative errands and attended an official board meeting as well. This internship helped to improve her professionalism, leadership, and quick thinking skills. Overall, she really enjoyed seeing how camp works from the other side, after all her years of working there as a counselor!
