Ready for your campers to have a Shaw-esome week at camp? Here are some things you should know before you plan to send your camper(s) off to Camp Shaw.

Prohibited Items

For the health and safety of all campers, the following items are prohibited at camp:

  • Electronic Devices/Cell Phones
  • Snacks
  • Alcohol/Marijuana/Tobacco/Nicotine in any form
  • Drugs (except for those left with the Camp Nurse)
  • Animals
  • Weapons
  • Personal Sports Equipment (except with permission from the Camp Director)

Camp Shaw-waw-nas-see is an electronics-free camp.  Because of this, we ask that you please do not allow electronic devices (ipads, tablets, smart watches, etc.) or cell phones to stay at camp with your camper. Cameras are allowed, but we cannot be responsible for their loss or damage and recommend disposable single use cameras. If electronic devices and/or cell phones are brought to camp, they will be placed in our office for safe-keeping and will be returned to parents at check out.

Please do not send snacks with or to your camper.  Snacks in the cabin draw unwelcome woodlands visitors and expose campers to potentially life-threatening allergens.  Snacks are available at the trading post and are consumed outside of the cabin.

Campers may not bring alcohol, marijuana in any form, tobacco or nicotine in any form, drugs (except for prescription or over the counter drugs left with the camp nurse), animals, or weapons to camp. Personal sports equipment may not be brought to camp except with special permission from the Camp Director, and may only be used on camp property with the Camp Director’s explicit permission.

Parents/guardians may not possess alcohol, marijuana, or illegal drugs on camp property during check-in/check-out.  Any weapons brought by parents/guardians must be in compliance with Illinois state laws for the possession of weapons on private property. Any pets brought to camp by parents/guardians during check-in/check-out must be leashed and under parent/guardian control at all times.

Driving to/from Camp

Campers with a valid driver’s license may drive themselves back and forth from camp, with signed parent permission form (please obtain in advance from our office manager).

Money

All money must be deposited in the trading post – this is to ensure that money is not misplaced during your camper’s stay at Camp Shaw. Please do not send money with your camper during their stay at camp.

Cabin Mate Requests/Counselor Requests

While we know many campers come to camp with one or more good friends from home, camp is a wonderful opportunity to make new friends.  For that reason we discourage campers from requesting cabin mates. Campers are placed in same-sex cabins according to age. However, campers attending Try Camp, Youth Camp, and Extreme Camp may request one cabin mate. We will honor those requests if they meet the criteria below:

  1. Campers must be the same sex
  2. Campers must be no more than 2 years apart in age
  3. Both campers must request each other

Siblings will not be placed in the same cabin unless requested and only if they meet the criteria above.

Campers in the CIT1 or CIT2 program may not request cabin mates.

To ensure that all campers have the best experience at camp, we will no longer make exceptions to this policy, unless special circumstances are approved by the Camp Director.

Unfortunately, we cannot honor requests for campers to be placed with specific counselors.
